Klamath County commissioners have approved spending $8,140 to advertise the Veterans Service Office and encourage more residents to seek out the office for help.

Approved Tuesday, the funding would go toward six months of local billboard advertising through Outfront Media.

Kathy Pierce, veterans service officer, said the funding would come from state revenue set aside to help counties reach out to veterans. She said the contract with Outfront Media would include creation of the sign, as well as displaying of the ad on various billboards throughout Klamath Falls.

Pierce said the need for advertising began after the Veterans Service Office moved from downtown Klamath Falls to Vandenberg Road in 2016. Since the move, many veterans have been unaware of the office’s location and she said the goal of advertising is to direct more residents to the new facility.

Commissioner Donnie Boyd noted some local schools have already begun advertising the office to students and families and Pierce said she has been receiving positive responses from this.

Commissioners also recognized veterans employee Teri Gentry for recently completing her accreditation as a veterans service officer during the last year. Commissioner Derrick DeGroot, a Navy veteran, said Gentry has played a significant role since joining the office, including helping local veterans receive more than $1 million in unclaimed benefits.
